我有一个关于下一个“进化节奏”乐章的草稿,但似乎我的博客计划中发生了一次意外的自然扰动。你看,就在我写这篇文章的时候,飓风艾琳正朝我这里直扑而来。

扰动有一种奇特的方式,可以稍微——有时甚至很多地——重组生态系统!虽然当我在加固我的房屋和院子时,我的工作效率暂时陷入停滞,但我们实际上并不确定飓风如何影响许多物种。我认为我们只是想当然地认为大多数动物能够迅速恢复,因为,嗯,那是它们生活的地方。那是它们最适宜的栖息地。

其实我也没什么不同。北卡罗来纳州沿海地区是我家人最适宜的栖息地。这里几乎全年天气都很好。从四月到十月,水温都足够温暖可以游泳(尽管对于我们物种中更勇敢的一些成员来说,全年都可以游泳)。这里很安全,我们有一处很大的房产,偶尔会有几米外沼泽地里迷路的招潮蟹来访。我的孩子们在成长过程中与大自然和海洋融为一体。在这里,几乎在任何地方都能感受到悠闲的生活节奏。卡罗特岛上的野马悠闲地漫步,啃食着咸草,皮弗岛上的野猫只是仰面躺在杂草丛生的铁轨上,甚至连松鼠和蝴蝶在这里也显得不那么胆小。

有时,有些地方会变得过于平静和自满,因此大自然(例如:科里奥利效应、摩擦力以及少许混沌)会稍微震动一下,以提醒我们保持警惕。在扰动中幸存下来的个体能够更好地适应未来的灾难。这些特征会遗传给后代,并延续适应性良好的物种的繁荣谱系。至少,直到新的扰动来临。
