所以，昨晚我发出了正式通知，告知今年“开放实验室”文集的所有入围者，在一小时之内，Twitter 上一片沸腾，人们分享他们对这个消息的兴奋。这太棒了——我喜欢给好人带来好消息——但最初的计划是在一月份的某个时候正式宣布。不过，我已经准备好这篇文章了，现在看来没有太多必要等到一月份，对吧？
首先，我想重申 Ed Yong 在 Twitter 上说的一些话。这是一本选集，收录了 2011 年部分最佳博客文章中的 51 篇，而不是 51 篇“最佳”文章。这是一个关键的区别，因为，让我们面对现实，很可能有很多没有被提名的遗珠，而且我们很想收录一些文章，但为了将数量减少到 51 篇而不得不删减。此外，有些东西在博客形式中效果很好，但不能很好地转化为印刷版。（不过，我对未来电子书的可能性寄予厚望。）
当我说从 720 篇投稿中筛选出入围者是一个非常痛苦的过程时，我绝对不是在开玩笑。没有所有志愿者评审员的帮助，我绝对无法做到（完整的感谢名单将在稍后公布）。即便如此，Bora 和我还是进行了大量的互相挠头苦恼，尤其是在我们被迫做出的最后 10-12 个删减名额上。

最后，我们着眼于文集的整体平衡，并挑选了那些符合我们所缺少的要求的文章——幽默、个人反思、短篇、长篇、主题多样性和作者“声音”等等——但任何一篇被删减的十几篇“竞争者”也会成为文集的很好的补充。（作为今年的编辑，我自动将我自己的提名文章从评选中移除；当有这么多其他有价值的文章正在考虑时，我简直无法证明将其纳入是合理的。）我认为我们最终得到了一个良好、多样化的组合，并且（令人惊讶的是）男性和女性博主几乎完美的 50/50 分配比例，尽管这不是有意为之。
