天文学家使用 NASA 的红外斯皮策太空望远镜对银河系中约 3000 万颗恒星的光进行采样,观察到银河系中心有一个由相对较老的恒星组成的长棒状结构横跨银河系中心。已知棒状结构存在于其他一些螺旋星系中,研究人员长期以来一直在思考我们的星系中可能也存在棒状结构。然而,他们不确定银河系中心会包含棒状结构、椭圆结构还是两者兼有。

新的观测结果描绘了迄今为止最清晰的银河系内部图像,并以前所未有的细节揭示了明显的棒状结构。这个棒状结构的长度约为 27,000 光年(比预期长 7,000 光年),并且以 45 度角倾斜于银河系的主平面。
